A few days ago I was in the Milan Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, and looking at the beautiful lights I decided to recreate them using Grasshopper. The definition uses the Catenary component and a few tricks to add some random variation in the properties of the various elements.
All the lights are created with basic spherical meshes, with two different sizes. The flashing lights are spheres that are randomly scaled up and increased in luminosity.
The animation was done very quickly using Grasshopper's default Animate component, and saving the Rendered viewport (no Cycles here).
With a bit of post-processing, this method can be used to add very quickly and efficiently some decorative lights to any 3D scene or in VFX.
