This type of geometry can be achieved using different techniques. In this case the base curves are generated from the intersection between a surface and a set of planes perpendicular to a spine curve.

The complexity/variety is achieved by creating “clusters” of curves and by applying several randomization operations.
The geometries were rendered in Blender using the Eevee realtime engine.
